Recap of Green Day's 'last-minute replacement' show in Oakland last night!

Green Day put another variation on their recent penchant for a surprise/last minute show last night. This time the boys were called in as replacements for Janes Addiction (who had to pull out due to family reasons) in Oakland last night. Green Day were called in just an hour before the show! How fucking cool?! Tre Cool! (And on his Birthdaytoo!)

The news broke on LIVE 105 radio:

"Unfortunately, one of the members of Jane's Addiction had an emergency family situation. The band is not able to play tonight's show a scheduled.

NEVER FEAR! Local heroes Green Day are here to save the day!"

So Green Day were added to the bill for the "Not So Silent Night" Christmas show being held at the 20,000 capacityOracle Arena, along with Beta StateYoung The GiantBushMumford & Sons and Floerence and The Machine (- who you might know covered songs from Nimrod prior to their breakthrough).

There were some tickets left at the box office, so some Green Day fans in the vicinity made a mad dash to get to the show on time! A few rumours just before the show suggested that Green Day might play Dookie in its entirety. That wasn't quite the case, although Billie Joe announced they'd be playing a lot of "old shit" and so they did, playing classics such as BurnoutGoing To Pasalacqua and Nice Guys Finish Last

Adrienne tweeted this during the show (along with a photo):

"The master at work ;)"

Green Day releases a cover of "Hybrid Moments" for Metallica's 30th birthday

As it was announced last night on Green Day's official site, the Idiot Club has released a video of the band congratulating metal band, Metallica, on their 30th birthday. In the video, the band performs a cover of the Misfit's song "Hybrid Moments," which has been prominent at recent live shows.

Happy 39th Birthday Tre Cool

On behalf of all of us here at the Green Day Authority, I would like to take a moment to wish Tre Cool a very happy 39th birthday!

Take 5 minutes out of your day to help celebrate Tre's birthday by listening to a few of his short songs.

Billie Joe fills in on guitar for Emily's Army at "1-2-3-4 Go! Records" in Oakland

Emily's Army guirarist Travis Neumann had to pull out of Emily's Army show with Bobby Joe Ebola And The Children MacNuggitsat the 1-2-34 Go! Records store last night, after he had to have an operation to have his tonsils out in hospital. We wish Travis well with that (eat lots of ice cream dude).

Rather than cancel their show, Emily's Army recruited a Mr. Billie Joe Armstrong to fill in on guitar. By all accounts, Armstrong plugged the gap pretty well, drawing on his years of experience playing in another up and coming band, Green Day.

One of our friends from the Green Day Community, Sandra, was at the show and had this to say about it:

"Billie Joe was the "guest guitarist" for Travis of Emily's Army last night at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records. The show was awesome. Bobby Joe Ebola was hilarious. The stage was set for EA, and when it was time for them to come out the lights were cut off. Then we see them all in their Christmas holiday hats- including Billie all the way on the left-hand of the stage. Nat Nesser was taking photos, sitting on the side of the stage that Billie was on (Bill Schneider was there sitting next to Nat.)

Billie did well filling in for Travis; there were a bunch of setlists and 'notes' at his foot that he was looking down at a lot. Billie was glancing at Joey a lot, and at one point pretended that he was about to jump on Joey's drum set. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. Whenever Billie had a cool guitar riff, he'd shove his guitar in Bill's face while playing it and laughing. For a lot of the time, BJ actually had a pretty serious look on his face but occasionally would goof around with Cole or Joey. He didn't say a word during the show; he was pretty much just on the side playing guitar which was different (all those Green Day shows where he'd dominate the stage) but good since it was EA's show.

They had a great set list which ended with Loch Lomond. The pit was hella crazy!! Everyone in the front was getting pushed onto the stage (I fell on Cole's mic stand at one point... oops!) but it was so lively which I absolutely loved. We were all falling over in the front, super low stage, but helping each other up. Saw Adi there too, or at least her dreads, off to the side near the band entrance. People were crowd surfing left and right, and many were jumping on stage to sing a line and then jump off into the crowd (mostly buddies of EA though.) Great show. Started an hour late but ended right on time. Oh yes, and Billie must've been participating in No-Shave-November with that beard he had! Overall, awesome show."

Sounded like a fun show! Check out this thread for more discussion and pictures.

Billie Joe and Adrienne featured on MTV with NRDC Green Gift video

MTV.com has just posted this exclusive NRDC video featuring Billie Joe and Adrienne talking about NRDCGreenGifts.org, a place for people to purchase gifts that help the envrioment.

(The video is limited by region, but we'll upload a copy to YouTube as soon as we can)

Here's the full story from MTV.com

"As Billie Joe puts it in the video -- in between scenes of him smashing a ukulele -- "gifts that won't end up broken but will actually put the world back together again."

That's very much the message behind the Armstrongs' NRDC spot: Instead of spending cash on a bunch of crap that, frankly, you probably won't touch once the holiday decorations have come down, why not invest in the future of our planet and make a difference in the process.

"This holiday season, I can't buy a bunch of sh-- gifts that he'll just end up breaking," Adrienne Armstrong laughs. "Instead, I go to [the Green Gifts website] where I can get awesome things for our friends and family.""

Rumours, Rumors, Rumours... Green Day at Pinkpop 2012?

You have to watch out for 'rumoursville' stories on the net, but can you deny that they are a bit of fun? After the recent rumours (sorry, America) that Green Day would be performing at the Reading/Leeds festival in 2012, we're now hearing that they've been touted for another appearance at Pinkpop festival in Holland!

You may remember Green Day headlined the festival in May 2010, to kick off their early-summer tour in Europe, for21st Century Breakdown.

If you can read Dutch, you can check out pinkpopcentral.com, where this particular rumour came from. If like me, you can't read Dutch, then you're fu... actually you can translate it. Or thirdly, you could just believe us... that this is indeed a rumour, right now at least.

Having said that, it kinda feels like something's up!

Bob Gruen talks about Green Day, "They're one of the best band's I've hung out with"

Photographer Bob Gruen did an interview with SoundSpike talking about his career as a rock photographer, documenting some of the biggest rock bands in the world. Here's an excerpt about his thoughts on Green Day:

"You toured with Green Day last year. What was that like?

Oh yeah, I really have a lot of fun with those guys, they are among the funniest people I know. They're constantly cracking each other up. They're great. They're one of the best band's I've hung out with, and I really enjoy their music and I really enjoy them. They're punks, they've got a real great attitude. You know that Walmart is one of the biggest sellers [of CDs] -- I think Walmart sells about half the CDs and albums in the U.S., and they're very strict about the language on CDs. Some bands will change the lyrics so that Walmart will carry their record. When their last record came out, Green Day refused to change their lyrics, and Walmart wouldn't carry the album. When they asked Billie Joe how he felt about that, he said, "Well if they think it's dangerous why don't they just move it out of the record department and sell it over by the guns and knives and the other dangerous things they sell." That's the reason I like Green Day. They just have common sense and a good sense of humor."

Check out the full interview, it's all very interesting. He talks about some of the other artists he's worked with like John Lennon, The Clash, and Tina Turner, as well as photography and the role it has with music.
