Kyle Rodas 1996-2011

Last month I wrote about a teenager battling brain cancer who's last wish was to meet his favorite musicians, Green Day, Linkin Park and Ozzy Osbourne. When we first posted the story Kyle's condition was bad, and his family knew he had limited time.

I got an email from Kyle's dad, Oscar, letting me know that Kyle passed away early this morning. He was incredibly grateful for all the support they got from fans of Kyle's favorite bands who helped reach out to the band members themselves, as well as sending cards and letters of support.

Kyle celebrated his 15th birthday two weeks ago on July 14th.

Our thoughts go out to Kyle's family on their loss today. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of Kyle's dream.

Billie Joe featured in a documentary about rock and roll photographer Bob Gruen

Back in March the UK television network, Sky, did a special documentary on photographer Bob Gruen. Bob is known internationally for his work with punk and rock stars such as The Who, John Lennon, Led Zeppelin, KISS, along with many others. Since 2002 Bob Gruen has been taking pictures for Green Day whenever they have been in the New York City area.

In the documentary Billie Joe along with other of Gruen's clients are interviewed in the documentary talking about Bob's work. You can watch the full documentary below.

"Blue" guitar birthday cake

One of our forum members, Meeshy, recently had a birthday and received one of the coolest looking cakes I've ever seen in my life. It's a custom version of "Blue," Billie Joe's famous guitar.

Here is what she had to say about it:

"Had a birthday party with some friends and family yesterday and my wife managed to have my brother-in-law make me the best birthday cake ever! I was completely blown away by how amazing it turned out! I hated myself for slicing into it! It felt so wrong!"

Like her, I'm sad she had to cut into it! It's a pretty damn awesome cake. I'd love to have one like that for my next birthday. There's a discussion about it on the forum which you can read here.

To view a bigger version of the photo, click the photo at the right, or click here.

By the way, Happy belated birthday Meeshy!

Green Day's Official Book Release Pushed Back

Hey guys, my name's Amanda (¿Whatsername? on the forum), and I just joined the site a few days ago to help out with posting the news. I'm really excited to be working on GDA - its something I've wanted to do since I started visiting the site about six years ago.

A few months back, we posted that Green Day was releasing an official book "about the band, by the band." From the description on Amazon, it sounds like the book, tentatively titled Green Day, will be a photographic catalog of the band through the American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown eras:

"This dynamic first book from the popular punk rock band Green Day will include hundreds of photographs of the band on tour and backstage, as well as ephemera including backstage passes, ticket stubs, handwritten notes and lyrics, and more... This fan must-have will also feature a foreword by Billie Joe Armstrong."

It was originally set to be released in October of this year, but according to Amazon, the date has been pushed back to September 20th, 2012. This date isn't official yet, so as we get nearer to the release date it is subject to change. However, you can place your pre-orders now and view the full product description here.

Thanks to Ally for sending this news.

The Network vinyl and 'mystery tee' bundle from Adeline

The Network's album Money Money 2020 is coming to vinyl here at the end of the month. To celebrate, Adeline Records is taking pre-orders for a vinyl and t-shirt bundle. For $25 you get Money Money 2020 on vinyl as well as a Network "mystery tee."

"Finally! The Network's debut LP "Money Money 2020" gets its first wax treatment! And on 180-gram blue vinyl, no less! This bundle ships with one LP and one exclusive Network t-shirt. Here's the catch: the t-shirt design is a mystery! What does it look like? No idea. What color is the tee itself? Good question! What CAN we promise you? An exclusive, limited edition t-shirt full of awesomeness. That's about it. We'll reveal the design once we start shipping orders."

Adeline's site says that they will be begin shipping the bundle the week of July 25th. You can pre-order the bundle by clicking here. Or, if you'd only like to get the vinyl and not the t-shirt, you can pre-order that here.

Green Day to play Sonisphere in 2012?

NME.com recently interviewed Sonisphere organizer Stuart Galbraith about the line-up for their 2012 festival. Galbraith mentions that they are in "talks" to get The Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers on the bill, and he mentions Green Day as well.

"Asked if he would consider booking either Foo Fighters or Red Hot Chili Peppers for 2012, he said: 'They're both two that we're talking to, amongst a whole list of others. I also think we could have Green Day and Blink-182 here, but none of those are confirmed.'"

Obviously, this is just a rumor at the moment and should be taken with a grain of salt. But it's nice to see some festivals would like Green Day on their bill, even though they haven't put out new material since 2009.

We'll be sure to post an update if there is one in the future.

Green Day included in Billboard and MTV 4th of July lists

Here in the USA it is the 4th of July, which means that it is independence day! In celebration, Green Day has made many independence day list's on the internet.

The first list that Green Day is included in is Billboard.com's "15 Awesome 'America' Songs" with the song American Idiot. According to Billboard the "Key America Lyric" in the song is:

""Don't want to be an American idiot / One nation controlled by the media / Information age of hysteria / It's calling out to idiot America."

You can view the full list over on Billboard.com by clicking here.

Green Day was also included in MTV's list entitled "A Fashion Tribute To Fourth Of July Music Videos" with their 2004 music video "American Idiot".

"Please direct your attention to the red tie. Clearly, Billie Joe is punk. The eyeliner and wet-look hair are clear indicators of anti-establishment. But what we like, what really interests us, is not the black or the aggro or the spitting or whatever he does, but that little pop of color he throws in. And he's done it before but this time it sticks and suddenly there is an entire nation of raccoon-eyed dudes with skinny ties...and I'm not sure how I felt about it then, but now, well, now it's perfect and sums up the early aughts deliciously."

Other artist's that made the list include Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus. You can read the full list on MTV.com by clicking here.

Lady Gaga talks in-depth about why she loves Green Day

In many interviews Lady Gaga has talked about how the first album she ever bought with her own money was Green Day's Dookie, but she never really went in-depth before on why she loved the album so much. Now, in a recent interview with OutFrontColorado.com Lady Gaga explains exactly what Dookie means to her.

"I always talk about Green Day, because Dookie was the first album that I went to buy on my own. I think because I got bullied in school there was something I really appreciated about punk culture. It allowed me to feel unified with something that was separate from my community at school. Even though I didn’t have a lot of punk friends or I didn’t go to punk shows – because when I was 13, my mother would never have allowed me to leave the house and go downtown to see a punk show – just having the album in my hands and reading the lyrics and listening to the music made me feel like I was a punk, feel like a Green Day fan, feel like I was part of a union that was separate from my situation. That’s really carried through into my music and my dream and my message. But what’s been so great is social media. Unlike when I was a kid, my fans now have a way to get to know each other and be connected through social media so that the culture can grow."

Shenanigans was released 9 years ago today

Besides being Billie Joe and Adrienne's 17th anniversary today, Green Day's album Shenanigans also celebrates it's anniversary today.

Shenanigans is a compilation album of B-Sides to previous Green Day singles that were not easily accessible to the public. The album came with one new previously unreleased song, "Ha Ha You're Dead" written by Mike Dirnt.

You can read a review of the album from when the album first came out on NME.com byclicking here.

Watch and download an interview with Billie Joe and Michael Mayer at the 92nd Street Y

Back in September of last year Billie Joe and Michael Mayor took part in the "Broadway Talks" series that was being held at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Up until now only short video clips from the event have been released, but I am happy to say that now video of the full interview has been released.

In the interview Billie Joe and Michael Mayor are interviewed by Jordan Roth of Jujamcyn Theaters and they talk about the backgrounds of both Billie Joe and Michael Mayer. Fan questions are also asked.

My personal favorite part of the interview is when Billie Joe is asked if he could play anyone in the musical, what character would he play. Billie Joe just looks around awkwardly and says that he doesn't know...and then just a week later it was announced that Billie Joe would play St. Jmmy. So you know he already knew at this point.

Happy 17th Anniversary Billie Joe and Adrienne!

On behalf of everyone here at the Green Day Authority I would like to wish Billie Joe and Adrienne a happy 17 year wedding anniversary.

Billie Joe first met Adrienne on Green Day's first tour in Minnesota. After having a long-distance relationship Billie Joe asked Adrienne to come out to California. As Billie Joe describes it in the Behind the Music interview:

"Adrienne was something that had nothing to do with my band and I was totally in love with her. We got married a month later, she got a ratty little dress and we got married in my backyard."

Have a wonderful day Billie Joe and Adrienne!

A message to Green Day fans from Kyle Rodas and his family

Earlier this month we learned of Kyle Rodas, a young teenager diagnosed with brain cancer whose last wish was to talk with members of his favorites bands: Green Day, Ozzy Osbourne, and Linkin Park. Members from each of those bands called or met with Kyle, including Billie Joe, who talked to Kyle and his dad Oscar.

Shortly after that, GDA started raising some donations so we could send something on behalf of us Green Day fans and to help in whatever way possible. Our friend Kat also asked Green Day fans to send in cards and letters so we could pass them all on to Kyle and his family. Last week were able to donate nearly $1000 to the Rodas family, and delivered some 70+ cards and letters sent by you guys.

Here is a message passed to us from Kyle's family:

" On Behalf of Kyle and our Family, we want to thank Andres, Kat, Green Day Members and the entire Green Day Authority Family for helping us.

Thank you for the Beautiful Letters, post cards, gifts, blessings and messages.
Every card was read to Kyle and all messages were played for him to hear. We may not ever repay each and everyone of you, but do know this: WE are forever indebted to all. You will forever be in our prayers and thoughts.

Truly, from the deepest of our hearts... Thank you!!!

KYLE and FAMILY"

1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours celebrates it's 20th anniversary

On this date twenty years ago, Green Day released their first full length album, 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, on Lookout! Records.

Originally this album was released in 1990 as 39 Smooth, but then it was released again in 1991 as a compilation album to include the band's first 3 EP's: 39 Smooth, Slappy, and1000 Hours, which were recorded at the Art of Ears Studio in San Francisco, CA between 1988 - 1990. This is the only Green Day album that Tre Cool did not play on since John Kiffmeyer had not yet left the band.

In 2007, Green Day re-released this album on Reprise Records, calling it a "re-mastered" version. As of 2010, it has sold over 600,000 copies.

Take an hour out of your day and take a listen to this classic album. If you are a newer fan and haven't bought 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours yet this would be the perfect time to buy it on iTunes or Amazon.

"All you need to know about Green Day" article from AltSounds.com

AltSounds.com has posted a really good article titled "All you need to know about Green Day" providing a brief history of the band and some insight on what they've accomplished over their 20+ year career.

"If you were unfortunate enough to be born in the 1990s, then they were your band. You grew up with them. You watched them rise, fall, then rise again so high that no one could bring them back down. No, I am not talking about Take That, I am sorry to say, but I am in fact speaking of the almightily divine Green Day. The American punk-rock stars have been the soundtrack to my upbringing, when I first came into contact at the ripe old age of 8 years old. As I’ve matured through adolescence, Green Day have matured with me, to become one of the biggest bands in the world, ever."

The article takes you through the band's early years up until the present day all in the eyes and viewpoint of the writer, whom is a big Green Day fan. You should definitely read this article.
