Green Day included in Rolling Stone's "25 Boldest Career Moves"

Rolling Stone has put together a list of their top 25 boldest career moves in the history of rock. They included Green Day's decision to turn 2004's American Idiot album into a Broadway musical at number 16.

"Punk rock and Broadway are at two ends of the musical spectrum, but in 2010 Green Day decided to bridge that gap by turning their 2004 smash LP American Idiot into a Broadway play. It was a pretty big gamble."

Green Day's page can be viewed by clicking here. The full list, which includes moments from Prince, The Boss, and Lil' Wayne, among others, can be viewed here.

Dookie listed in MSN's "20 Most Influential Albums of the Last 20 Years"

Green Day's album Dookie has placed number five on MSN.com's "20 Most Influential Albums of the Last 20 Years".

"It didn't sound much like punk to us, but Green Day's angry pop rock was a wakeup call to a generation. Selling over 10 million copies, Dookie launched countless imitators, both good and bad. And let's not forget, without it we'd have no Busted, no McFly, no Son of Dork. "

Tom Walsh is joining the GDA team as our new news editor

Last month we announced a new position open on the GDA team, and I'm happy to announce that Tom Walsh will be joining our team as a news editor. He's been a Green Day fan for years, and is currently working on a masters in Journalism in England.

He runs his own site, Alert The Audience.co.uk, where they review albums and music across the punk/indie/rock genre.

Tom will be working with us to first get our newsletter up to date (you can sign up for that here), then will help us work on bringing more content (editorials, reviews, etc.) on GDA later on, and he'll probably poke his head around here at times as well. You can follow him on Twitter if you'd like.

Thanks to all the hundreds of folks who sent in an application - there were many incredibly qualified writers who applied to be on the team. We will be in contact with some of you very soon as we start working on our editorial section to see if some of you might still be interested in writing for GDA.

Green Day included in The Best of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live compilation

Green Day has been included in a new compilation album of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performances entitled The Best of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live. The song included is "Blitzkrieg Bop", originally a song by the Ramones which Green Day covered at the 2002 ceremony.

In the original performance included "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Teenage Lobotomy", but the album only includes "Blitzkrieg Bop". You can watch a video from the performance over in our Music section.

The Best of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live is available for download on iTunes.

Pre-order Awesome As Fuck from Interpunk and receive a free promo poster

Interpunk has put up on their website a for pre-order the Awesome As Fuck CD/DVD for $18.25. The cool thing is that they are offering a free Awesome As Fuck promo poster with every pre-order (while supplies last).

They strongly recommend purchasing a mailing tube so the poster can safely be mailed to you without being folded and put in with the rest of your order. For US orders, the tube is $2.00 and I think is highly worth it. For international orders it is $4.00.

The poster reads:

"New live CD recorded around the world with bonus live DVD features 'Holiday,' '21 Guns,' 'When I Come Around' and the brand-new track 'Cigarettes and Valentines.' Bonus DVD includes brand-new explosive Tokyo performance."

Click here to purchase the album on Interpunk.

Video of "21 Guns" from Awesome As Fuck

The video of "21 Guns" from the Awesome As Fuck DVD/Blu-ray has been posted on the German news siteStern.de. The great performance can be watched below. I love the live version of this song where Billie sings the chorus after the solo with piano backing instead of another verse.

American Idiot musical closing April 24th, Billie Joe will return for final three week

The New York Times is reporting that the American Idiot musical will be performing for the final time on Sunday, April 24th. The producers of the show broke the news this morning.

After the April 24th show, the musical will have performed 27 previews and 421 regular performances, and will have grossed over 34 million dollars. Much more than the $8-$10 million it cost to get it on Broadway. Since Billie Joe left the show a couple weeks ago, ticket sales have declined dramatically from about $1.3 million to $400,000.

Billie Joe will be will be coming back to perform as St. Jimmy for the final three weeks of the show, starting April 5. Davey Havok's run as St. Jimmy will end March 13th and it is unknown who will fill the void until Billie comes in. It will be interesting to see who plays the role.

Tickets are still available but I'm going to guess they'll sell quickly, especially for Billie's three week stint. So get your tickets soon if you would like to see the show before it closes its doors.

The show is still scheduled to tour this fall and currently holding auditions in some cities

Green Day / Hüsker Dü – "Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely" Split 7"

Record Store Day is coming up next month on April 16th and Green Day will once again be taking part in the celebrations. This year Green Day has teamed up with American rock band, Hüsker Dü to release a split 7" entitled "Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely".

The spit 7" features the song "Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely", originally by Hüsker Dü. One side of the 7" will feature the Hüsker Dü version of the song and on the flip side will be Green Day's cover of the song.

My guess is that Green Day's recording of the song will not be a new recording, but a recording that was done for the MTV show "Influences". You can find out more information about the song in our music section.

For those of you that don't know, Record Store Day is a day when independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate music. Every year special vinyl and CD releases are made just for this day in April.

Updated list of Green Day awards, 1994 - 2011

We've finally updated the Green Day Awards section, which lists all the awards Green Day has picked up from 1994-2011. It's been a while since we last updated this section, but finally got around to updating it with awards picked up since 2006 (which was the last time we had updated it...), and we better organized the section so that you don't feel like gouging your eyes when when trying to read it.

Check it out, let us know if there's anything we missed (we didn't list awards where they were nominated but didn't win after 2006), and we'll update it sooner than every 5 years.

AudioTechnology.com.au interviews Green Day engineer Chris Dugan

Back in the beginning of November we posted that the people from AudioTechnology.com.au were in Oakland to tour Green Day's recording studio and interview Green Day's engineer, Chris Dugan. Finally four months later they have finally put out their interview with Chris Dugan on their website.

This article is a extremely interesting read and covers a lot of the technical aspects of Green Day's recording process that is not generally focused on. The article talks about everything from the individual instruments each of the band members use in the studio, to the tracking of the albums, and the mixing process. They also include some pictures of Green Day's studio.

You can read an online version of the magazine on AudioTechnology.com.au by clicking here. The Green Day portion of the magazine starts on page 19.

Davey Havok talks about his role in American Idiot with AOL.com

Recently, AFI lead singer, Davey Havok got to sit down for an interview with AOL Music to talk about his current role as St. Jimmy in the American Idiot musical.

"I received a phone call in January and was asked by Billie [Joe Armstrong] if I would like to fill in for him as the role of St. Jimmy in 'American Idiot' starting March 1 on Broadway. It was really, really thrilling. I was awestruck, just completely astounded and I couldn't believe it. To be on Broadway is something that I've dreamt about since I was very, very young. It was something that I spoke about wanting to do since I was very young and it was also something that I never ever thought could be possible with the decisions I've made in my life. So, to receive that call was really mind-blowing."

Davey Havok, Justin Guarini, Libby Winters and Van Hughes begin new roles in American Idiot tonight

Tonight, Green Day's American Idiot Musical welcomes four new cast members to replace Billie Joe as St. Jimmy, John Gallagher as Johnny, Michael Esper as Will, and Christina Sajous as the Extraordinary Girl.

Taking over Billie Joe's spot as St. Jimmy is lead singer of AFI, Davey Havok, for a two week engagement. Recently Billie Joe stated:

"I couldn't be more excited that Davey is joining the American Idiot cast to play St. Jimmy. Not only is he a good friend of mine, but I feel that he also brings the perfect energy and air of menace to the part. The audience is going to freak out!"

Taking over Michael Esper's spot as Will in the musical is former American Idol contestant, Justin Guarini. Michael Mayer, the director of American Idiot said that Justin "blew us away in his audition", so I think that it is safe to say that he will be a good fit in the musical cast.

Lastly, taking over John Gallagher and Christina Sajous for the parts of Johnny and the Extraordinary Girl are two current ensamble members of American Idiot, Van Hughes and Libby Winters. Both a part of the American Idiot family since the musical debuted in Berkley, California. Michael Mayer said:
"I’m proud and excited to have Van and Libby, original Broadway cast members who have poured their blood, sweat and tears into the show over the past year, move into these lead roles."

You can read more about each of the new cast members joining the musical over on Playbill.com by clicking here.
