Billie Joe tweets about Green Day's new music, "the direction is fresh and hi energy"

Billie Joe has posted a little bit more on Twitter about the new music Green Day has been working on:

"Ok here's the scoop. GD has been jamming new songs everyday. There's a ton of new songs. The direction is fresh and hi energy. Feels great

I don't want to give away too much but just know that me mike tre and Jason are collaborating and having the best time playing music.

And that's not bullshit!!"

Billie Joe first wrote about the band playing new music back in March 2011, shortly before he left to New York City to play St. Jimmy for the final month of the show on Broadway.

"Playing new songs with Mike Tre and Jason the last couple weeks. Really fun. And working hard!"

Obviously the first thought in my mind was "fuck yeah!" Even though we know Green Day is pretty much constantly working on new material, it still feels good knowing there's new stuff out there. "Hi energy" also has me pretty excited. Can't wait till we get a small snippit of new stuff, though I don't expect that to happen anytime soon. I'd say we're still a year or two away for a new album, at least.

Green Day is known for taking as long as they feel necessary to get the music they want just right. Look at the span between the last couple albums (Warning to American Idiot: 4 years, American Idiot to 21st Century Breakdown: 5 years). 21CB was only released 2 years ago. None-the-less, it's exciting just to know the band is in the middle of this process, and I can't wait to hear what they're working on.

Awesome As Fuck vinyl and t-shirt available from Hot Topic

Hot Topic has posted a few "new" Green Day items up for sale. For starters, they now have an Awesome As Fuck Girl's t-shirt available, plus you can purchase the AAF vinyl. There's also a "web exclusive" shirt I haven't seen before, also a girl's size.

Click here to view all Green Day products from Hot Topic, including a few other shirts, logo patch, and some more vinyl.

Thanks to Gloria21Guns for the info.

I know many of you have been wondering why there's been a lack of posts. It was a combination of some of the team focusing on school as semesters came to an end, and I disappeared for a bit as I focused on getting out GDA merch, started work at my university and had family visiting the last few days. We have some new stuff we're working on and are getting back in the groove of publishing stuff here. Thanks for your patience, and for continuing to check the site every day.

Interview with Green Day's tour chefs: "Eat Like a Rock Star"

Zesterdaily.com interviewed Green Day's tour cooks, Sean Stone and Steve Jenkins at Green Day's recent show in Irving, California about how they prepare the band's food on the road. The article is an interesting read and at the end they even include a recipe to make a ten minute Ravioli dish.

"For big-name musical groups, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll don't cut it anymore. Healthy, freshly prepared meals are the order of the day. On show night, a 14-hour day is typical for the catering crew. When they're moving from town to town, after the concert, instead of heading to a motel, the crew loads into the bus. Before Irvine, the last concert was in Arizona. "We drove all night and slept on the bus," Stone said. "When we arrived at 10 a.m. in Irvine, we went shopping at Whole Foods and H Mart, a Korean-Chinese supermarket. Then we started cooking.""

Emily's Army debut album, produced by Billie Joe, is getting some 'buzz'

Emily's Army - a bay area band which includes Billie Joe's son, Joey, on drums - is getting some press about their upcoming album 'Don't Be A Dick' which was produced by Billie Joe and being released on Adeline Records. The band was recently featured on MTV's site with the following:

"Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has already influenced and turned on a new generation of teenagers to punk, and now he's doing the same for Generation Y.

Emily's Army, a pop-punk group made up of four Bay Area teenagers, is set to blow up with the June 14 release of their debut album, Don't Be A D***. On the drums: Armstrong's 16-year-old son Joey. Side note: A 16-year-old rocks harder than you. Deal with that."

There are also two articles from OCWeekly and the San Francisco Examiner with introductions of the band and news of their album, which is coming out June 14.

These guys opened up for the Foxboro Hot Tubs in NYC in April 2010. After watching that performance, I'm looking forward to checking out the new album, they really kicked ass.

Here's an article from MusicRemedy.com about their upcoming tour. They'll be playing a couple shows now in May, and then tour in Washington, Oregon and California next month. You can see their tour dates on their site.

For updates about the band, you can visit their site EmilysArmyBand.com, or you can follow them on Facebook andTwitter.

Celebrating 21st Century Breakdown's 2 year anniversary all this week on GDA

Since yesterday marked the 2 year anniversary of 21st Century Breakdown's release, we thought we'd spend this whole week celebrating Green Day's most recent studio album.

First off, we're going to focus on our current song of the week over at our GDC Forum, American Eulogy. Billie Joe has said this was one of the first songs written after the American Idiot era. Featuring vocals from Mike Dirnt as well, it was occasionally interchanged with Minority as a set 'closer' during the 21st Century Breakdown tour.

Here's an exemplary performance of the song, from Green Day's sold out show in Chula Vista, San Diego, in September 2010:

Share with us some of your thoughts on this song, and the album in general. Later on we'll be featuring some more in depth analysis from our contributors in the Green Day Community.

Last night Broadway.com held a ceremony to announce the winners of their 2011 Audience Choice awards in New York City. Billie Joe won the "Favorite Replacement" award where he was nominated for his run as St. Jimmy in the American Idiot musical.

Billie Joe played the role from January - February in 2011, as well as the final 3 weeks of the show in April till it's closing April 24th.

This is the third award won by the musical in the Audience Choice Awards. In 2010 the show won two awards, one for "Favorite Leading Actor in a Musical", which went to John Gallagher Jr., and "Favorite Ensemble".

Win an autographed pair of Billie Joe's shoes for charity

The American Idiot musical is auctioning off items from the Broadway show that will go to benefit the charity Broadway Cares (which we've written about here).

They have a number of really cool items up like some props from the show, and even programs and clothing signed by members of the cast.

Included in that are these shoes worn by Billie Joe during rehearsals for his run as St. Jimmy, and he also autographed them. Size 7 Creepers. He didn't actually use them during the show, then ended up being too heavy for all the running/climbing the stairs he did, but you can still buy them to help this charity.

They're also selling a couple of the "cast sliders" which they used in the hallways to announce changes to the cast. They're auctioning off the set which says "At this performance the role of St. Jimmy will be played by Billie Joe Armstrong".

Click here to view all the items.

Goldmine article now available online "Where does Green Day go from here?"

Last month we posted about Green Day being featured in Goldmine magazine. Now Goldmine has made the article available online. It's a very in-depth look through Green Day's career, covering everything from "Dookie" to "Awesome as Fuck." They talk about the success of American Idiot, as well as the band's entrance to Broadway and the other side projects Green Day entertains themselves with. It's a pretty great read, and nice summary of the band's career. Here's a snippit about the most recent stuff:

"And the track chosen as first (promo only) single [for Awesome as F**k] was “Cigarettes and Valentines,” one of the songs Green Day had been working on before switching direction and deciding to go for broke in creating “American Idiot.” It was a bold step that’s paid off in a big way for the band. By being open to pursuing new musical directions, Green Day has managed to make the transition from snotty punk rockers to confident elder statesmen — with a loyal fan base that’s eager to hear what the band’s going to do next."

About Chris Dugan - Green Day's audio engineer, photographer, and videographer

Last night on Twitter Billie Joe sent out the following tweet:

"Chris dugans birthday today! Authority needs to give him his own page! Best engineer on the planet!! We're at his party in Oakland"

First off, a belated Happy Birthday to Chris. Secondly, you should have seen my smile when that tweet went out. That's right, we're just "Authority" now.

Shortly after that tweet went out, I worked on a page for Chris Dugan. Who are we not to listen to Billie Joe? I gathered as much info as I could, so if you're interested in knowing more about the "best engineer on the planet", check out this page

Green Day Official Book Release?

Harper Collins Catalogs have the release of the first "official" Green Day book listed on their site, set to go on sale from October 25th, 2011. It's described as "the first official book about the band, by the band."

"The dynamic first book from the popular punk rock band Green Day will include hundreds of photographs of the band on tour and backstage, as well as ephemera including backstage passes, ticket stubs, handwritten notes and lyrics, and more. These gorgeous photos will be supplemented with lyrics from their last two hit albums American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, and captions from the rest of the band. This fan must-have will also feature a foreword by Billie Joe Armstrong."
